Band You Should Get To Know: Magic Kids

At first listen I’m pretty sure everyone has the same thought. Is this the Beach Boys? Nay, it’s Magic Kids. This new Surf Rock band’s debut album Memphis has a release date of August 31st and they already have quite an extensive tour. They will be stopping by FYF Fest (see previous post here) this Saturday September 4th to play a set. I’ve basically been researching FYF bands all day.

Anyway, check out Magic Kid’s video for “Superball” below. What do you you think?

Something For the Ladies: Diego Garcia – “You Were Never There”

Here’s a little something for you before you are off to bed in hopes of Joseph-Gordon Levitt incepting your dreams. Oh wait thats me. Anyway I just came across this song from Diego Garcia titled “You Were Never There.” It’s very sweet and swoony, something to listen to at night or while watching a sunset (cheesy I know). RCRD LBL described it as having an old school Iglesias touch but I also think it sounds a little like The Monkees or Tony Orlando…don’t judge me. He will be releasing a full album early 2011 so keep an ear to the ground or just keep reading this blog.

Listen: Freddy & Francine “Safe and Sound”

I have to give mad props to Annie for passing this band along to me today cause I’m loving this! Freddy & Francine was formed in 2008 in Northern California by members Bianca Caruso and Lee Ferris and Since then have produced two albums, the latest being The Briar Patch in 2009. Their sound reminds me of if you put Swell Season, The Mamas and the Papas and country band Sugarland in a blender and mixed it up: Folky with a hint of country in some songs. Check out the video below of their song “Safe and Sound” performed on the Santa Monica Ferris Wheel. I haven’t been on a ferris wheel since probably the 2003 Monroe County Fair double ferris wheel in which someone spit on me! True story. Check out their website here.

New Artist Alert: The Suzan

I just came across this Tokyo all girl quartet about 5 minutes ago and knew I had to share with all 10 of our readers. The Suzan could possibly be one of my new favorite groups, no joke. The girls, who have an album coming out in September through Fool’s Gold, were discovered by the Bjorn in Peter, Bjorn and John via Myspace and he offered to produce their first singe. The Suzan’s  “Home” is part indie dance pop with a hint of surfer pop but mostly energetic as I saw in the video of their performance from SXSW of “Uh-Ah” .Check out the song below and look out for their new album Golden Week For The Poco Poco Beat out in September. I wish I could pull off the neon eye makeup look!

New Favorite: The Morning Benders “Excuses”

Indie-rockers The Morning Benders have certainly put in their time opening for big names (MGMT, The Kooks, Death Cab, and the list goes on). Now it seems all that hard work is finally paying off for this Berkley, CA-based quartet. Two years after their little known 2008 release Talking Through Tin Cans, it seems the band is finally gaining more attention with their newly released Big Echo. Check out my recommended track “Excuses” from the new disc — before it gets featured by a big name advertiser and crammed into your ears against your will.
