MTV Video Music Award Nominations

We’ve all come to the conclusion that the MTV awards shows are a big joke. Not that they were ever taken seriously, but at least they were entertaining to watch and you never knew what was going to happen. Every year I watch the Video Music Awards with fingers crossed that it will actually be good just to be let down and pissed that I spent 2 hours watching a shitty awards show. This year will be no different I’m sure. The nominations have been announced and there are a few diamonds in the crap that MTV considers music. Here’s a few of my picks but you can catch the full list on MTV’s website.

Best New Artist:

Broken Bells “The Ghost Inside”

Best Collaboration:

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys “Empire State of Mind”

Best Hip-Hop Video:

I can’t pick…I like them all!

Best Rock Video:

Florence and the Machine “Dog Days Are Over”

See: Two Concerts That You Don’t Want to Miss

For the longest time I was constantly checking the Florence and the Machine website to see if they added any tourdates in Los Angeles and everytime it was a nay. Until a friend at work (thanks Erika!) informed me that indeed my dreams would be coming true! If you are wanting to see this amazing band I suggest getting tickets as soon as they go on sale because they are going to sky rocket to the top. Unfortunately they were MTV’s Band on the Rise or whatever this week which means all the 10 year olds that watch the channel will now be obsessed with Florence and the Machine.

The other band that I received an email update about was Broken Bells who will be making a pit stop in LA as well. I never saw The Shins in concert but I can imagine that James Mercer and Danger Mouse will put on a good show. And as previously stated, I would get these tickets early as well.

Check Out: Top 50 Albums of 2010 So Far

NPR recently polled a large amount of listeners to compile a list of the Top Albums of 2010 so far. Surprisingly, The Gorillaz album Plastic Beach came out on top. I’m not sure how I feel about this, it wouldn’t be my #1 but the people have spoken! Also making the top 10 were The Black Keys, Broken Bells, Beach House and one of our personal favorites here, Mumford & Sons. Check out the full list and download a PDF of the Top 50 at NPR.
