LISTEN: Jessica Lea Mayfield – “Our Hearts Are Wrong”

Although this singer has had 2 previous albums, I just now ran across Jessica Lea Mayfield. Like many comments on YouTube, you just can’t put a finger on what it is with this chick that makes her so appealing. Whatever it is it works. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice, somewhat reminding me of 90’s rock, but also sounding a little country at times. Hopefully that doesn’t scare anyone off. The first single “Our Hearts Are Wrong” off her newly released album Tell Me reminds me of something on my bathtime playlist…you know when you take a bath and light a bunch of candles and just relax. You can download this song for free at Jessica’s website and if you like it, the album is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Cover of the Day: Lady Antebellum – “High and Dry” by Radiohead

If you didn’t like breakout pop country group Lady Antebellum before, this cover might change your mind. Lady A recently covered Radiohead’s “High and Dry” for BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge and while at a concert decided to give their audience a taste too! You may be thinking “a country band covering Radiohead?? I’ll NEVER like it.” Well you sir should shut your mouth and just listen. I think they do a wonderful job with this cover adding their own country vibe to it but not veering too far from the already awesome original. Watch below – what do YOU think of the cover?

LISTEN:Black Mountain “The Hair Song”

Simplicity at it’s best with “The Hair Song” off of Black Mountain’s upcoming album Wilderness Heart out September 4. I’m digging the classic rock and country feel of this song which sounds to me like another “summer driving with the windows down” jam. This has to be on my ipod immediately and the weather needs to get better so I can drive to the beach! Check out the song below, and if you listen close enough you can hear some Zeppelin-esque guitar riffs in there…

Listen: Freddy & Francine “Safe and Sound”

I have to give mad props to Annie for passing this band along to me today cause I’m loving this! Freddy & Francine was formed in 2008 in Northern California by members Bianca Caruso and Lee Ferris and Since then have produced two albums, the latest being The Briar Patch in 2009. Their sound reminds me of if you put Swell Season, The Mamas and the Papas and country band Sugarland in a blender and mixed it up: Folky with a hint of country in some songs. Check out the video below of their song “Safe and Sound” performed on the Santa Monica Ferris Wheel. I haven’t been on a ferris wheel since probably the 2003 Monroe County Fair double ferris wheel in which someone spit on me! True story. Check out their website here.
