What to Do This Weekend: FYF Fest in Downtown LA

Have all your friends abandoned you this weekend? Or maybe you are all in town and pondering how to use this ample time? Well my friends and I will be attending FYF (Fuck Ya Fest) at the Los Angeles State Historic Park on Saturday and all of you are more than welcome to come! There is going to be a great music lineup and I just read that they have added a comedy lineup as well, not to mention all of the glorious food trucks that will be there. I mean everyone knows that where there are hipsters…there will be food trucks! I am extremely excited to see Local Natives, Warpaint and Dead Man’s Bones (Ryan Gosling’s band), just to name a few. Below is a small portion of the lineup and you can purchase tickets or check out the full lineup at the FYF website here!

Recent Concerts: Sunset Junction

Whats up everybody? It’s been a pretty intense 2 days of concerts which has resulted in liver failure and blisters, specifically in that order. My friends and I hit up Sunset Junction festival on Sunday around 5pm and were able to see three awesome sets: The Deadly Syndrome, Mayer Hawthorne & The County and of course Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

First up we caught half a set from The Deadly Syndrome on The Fold stage. I was really enjoying this band who have this indie semi-psychedelic sound to them although I felt bad because I was a little more interested in the acid dancing grandma nearby. Check out their music video for “Armrest” below!

Next up was Mayer Hawthorne and The County giving us some Motown soul. Mayer Hawthorne is like a less generic version of Michael Buble having much more original soul. Probably the funniest moment was during one song when all of a sudden a group of backup dancers rushed the stage. It was totally not expected and pretty bad ass helping him stand out from other throwback singers.

Last but not least local favorite and quickly rising hippie band Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, a personal fave of us writers here at The Boom Echo. Unfortunately I was so far back from the stage it creates a different experience but they still killed it and everyone of course was jumping around during “Home.” The band has this great energy, sometimes too hippie for me like when they wanted the crowd to all marry each other. I didn’t really get it but that is just how they are. The last song they performed, lead singer Alex got down into the audience urging everyone to sit down with him for the last song which was pretty cool to see. If you have a chance to see ES & TMZ live I really urge you to. There is just something about their music and the energy that they bring to the performance that create a great show all together!

New Band Alert: Vintage Trouble

I finally have an outlet to write about amazing bands that I see in Los Angeles that aren’t well known! Aren’t you happy for me? Anyway…last night while at Bar Lubitsch I saw this band that blew me out of the water. I have never been to a smaller show where the crowd got so into the songs, but that is exactly what I happened.

Vintage Trouble is a throwback band reminiscent of James Brown, The Rolling Stones and Marvin Gaye with just as much entertainment and style. The lead singer commands the stage with such enourmous energy, dancing around the stage and in the crowd and don’t even get me started on that voice. The band also knows what they are doing style-wise as they are all in sync dressed in suit pants with button-downs and vests, some even wearing hats. All of this together made for an amazing show last night and you better believe I will be back to see them again. It surprises me that a group with such talent has yet to see a record deal, but I guess that is what happens when record labels are only interested in the Katy Perry’s of the world.  Check out their website here and if I were you I would see them live. They play every Tuesday night at Harvelle’s Blues Club in Santa Monica.

See: Robyn Perform at Hollywood’s Amoeba Records

Euro-pop extraordinaire Robyn will be performing a free set on July 23rd at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. The show starts at 7 pm but trust me when I tell you to get there a few hours in advance since big acts like this draw a large crowd and the place hits capacity quick! Robyn’s club-worthy pop songs have been a staple in my ipod for quite some time now, but I realize that this is one of those “you either love her or hate her” artists as I’ve come to find out with friends. She has recently released a new album Body Talk Pt.1 and has plans to release 2 more albums by the end of this year. This chick is seriously making me look like a procrastinating loser! So far the tracks from Body Talk Pt.1 are more electro than her previous self-titled album, which the exception of the single “Dancing On My Own” which could have easily fit on the last. My personal favorite from Body Talk Pt. 1 is “Fembot” and does what most Robyn songs do best: it’s easy to dance to but if sung acoustic the true raw emotions of the lyrics come out. Check out the below acoustic set of “Dancing On My Own” and look out for Body Talk Pt.2 dropping in the U.K on September 6th. Konichiwa Bitches.
